'APPEAL FOE 'FUNDS

NORTHLAND CANDIDATE 1 SISTER COLLINS CHOSEN The selection is announced of Sister M. X. Collins, of Whangarei, as Queen of the North in the carnival beivg conducted by the lied Cross Society and the Order of St. John-for the purpose of raising money for the , Sick. and Wounded Fund. Early in the Great War Sister Collins went to England at her own expense® and in 1915 joined the British Heel Cross and the Order of St. Jcl&i. For six months she served in Malta and was then transferred to Egypt for a year. Late in 1916 she returned to England and joined Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Beserve. As a member she nursed in. various war hospitals in England, including the German Prisoners of War Hospital. Later she volunteered for service on hospital ships, serving for three and a-half months in the English Channel area and for a similar period on the African coast. *»•'. . . '

Sister Collins' total war service was four and a-half years. For 15 years she was a member of the. Returned Soldiers' Association executive at Whangarei, and has been a life member of the association for. the past five years. During the Centennial Exhibition in Wellington she was hostess'in the Northland reception rooms. Mrs. Matthews is the wife of Air-rigger Gordon Matthews, formerly of Hamilton, and now a member of the Royal New Zealand Air Force stationed at the Hobsonville air base. She is a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. H. E. Annett, of Matangi. • , , Two maids of honour, Mrs. J. "W. Moodie, of Hamilton, and Mrs. T. H. McDonald, of Hamilton, have also been chosen. Mrs. Moodie is the .wife, of Lieutenant J. W. Moodie, formerly, of Dunedin. and now a member of the 7th Anti-tank Regiment of the New Zealand Artillery. Mrs. McDonald is the wife of Private T. H. McDonald, «*of Hamilton, who is in Egypt with rne 18th (Auckland) Rifle Battalion, a first echelon unit.
