AUCKLAND WEST VOTE
Sir, —The Prime Minister, in his Sunday night broadcast, stated that 8940 electors of Auckland West supported the Government "to the limit." Among this 8910 are 2856 electors, who voted for Mr. Fortune, the Independent candidate. Throughout the election campaign it appeared to me, and, doubtless, to many others, that Mr. Fortune was definitely opposed to the present Government's complacent attitude with regard to the war. One of the points in his programme was the introduction of conscription. May I venture to suggest that the electors who voted for the Independent candidate did so because they wish to see a more vigorous policy than that adopted at present in New Zealand. Had they felt that the Government was at the moment doing its utmost in the war effort, the obvious way of supporting it "to the limit" would have been by voting outright for the official Labour candiilato. Auckland West.
