TROUT FISHING

RESTOCKING PROBLEMS DEVELOPING FINGERLINGS REPORT BY DEPARTMENT [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] EOTOEUA, Monday An announcement of interest to fishermen is expected ns tlio result of the visit of the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, to the district at the beginning of the month. It is understood that the Minister is greatly interested in the possibilities of improving the restocking of the fishing waters with fingerlings. The proposal is that the trout fry should develop to the fingerling stage under natural conditions of food supply, but in waters made safe from their enemies. • "There can bo no doubt that action in the direction envisaged by the Minister will improve the restocking methods, as it removes the undesirable aspects of the rearing of fingerlings under artificial conditions, such as hand-feeding, states a report _ presented by the Department ol' Internal Affairs. "At the same time, there are retained all the advantages of restocking with young fish that have passed under protection the high mortality stage "pertaining to fry. The Minister was shown the results of establishing smelt in some of the lakes. He expressed himself as much pleased with the success of the undertaking.
