REFUGEES FROM HITLERISM

Sir, —It would seem time that some definite statement were Ufeade in re-, gard to the problem of enemy aliens and refugees, for so long as tindue publicity is being given to it, and < especially at a time of war crisis, it can only end in a misinformed public coming to a conclusion not only unjust , to refugees from Hitlerism, but also harmfully confusing to the public mind. . " It is vital to regard as a distinct category of aliens those . are refugees who have fled from Nazi persecution either in Germany or in the States which Hitler lias ruthlessly over-run. AW these refugees have gained admittances to New Zealand only after the most careful investigation of their refugee character. There is not the slightest reason for anticipating anything but the fullest loyalty from refugees who have been persecuted by the very Nazi Government that Ave are at present lighting. Indeed, many refugees of military age have offered to serve with the . New Zealand forces, and some of them are already in camp. . . The Prime Minister has indicated that the activities of all aliens . are vigilantly watched by the authorities, and this is a necessary safeguard in their own as well as the comflfuinity s interest. But so long as the loyalty of any alien at all is not in doubt he should not be penalised either in our thoughts or actions. On the contrarv, his contribution to the commou welfaro should bo welcomed. It is not only, the part of humanity, but it _is the part of wisdom, not to inflict further sufferins; on innocent, people, who, after the fullest investigation, have been allowed to become useful- members of our community. That at least, is the part required by justice; . and fair play. Ernest, II . ut. Chairman, Aucklaud Rci ency. Committee* -
