Marie Corelli
WHEN Marie Corolli published "The Sorrows of Satan" in 1895, she was so annoyed with tlie reviewers' refusal to take her novels seriously that she liad a "special notice" printed on tlie hook's first page: No copies of this book are sent out for review. .Members of the Press will therefore obtain it (should they wish to do so) in the usual way with the rest of the public, i.e., through the booksellers and libraries. As I\l arie Corelli was one of the two biggest sellers of the day, reviewers did obtain it "in the usual way," but they continued to treat her as derisively ns her rival best-seller. Hall C'aine. "Vulgarity and insipidity mingled, as in the writings of Mr. Hall C'aine." said the famous "Yellow Book," "are more than mv weak flesh can bear." —Malcolm Elwin, in John O'London's Weekly.
