POINT HALSWELL PRISON

REQUEST FOR REMOVAL Steps which had been taken by a deputation from the board and other city interests to ask the Government to consider removing nt some opportune time to another locality the women's prison on Point Halswell woie outlined by the chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board, Mr. M. A. Eliott, at a meeting of the board. Mr. Eliott said the deputation had waited 011 the Minister of Justice, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, and stressed the importance to the city of tho removal of the buildings. He was sorry to say that the deputation did not net very much satisfaction, tho reason being that tlit; Government considered that it had too much money invested in the buildings to consider their removal. The deputation had asked that the Government take into consideration the advisability of making a start with their removal to another site at an opportune time. Mr. C. M. Turrcll said the Government said something like £IOO.OOO had been invested there, and that it was not prepared to spend money felscwhere. Sir Charles Norwood: No district wants a prison.
