THE LATE MR. SAVAGE
PURSUIT OF AN IDEAL FARMER'S BOY TO LEADER Practically a lifetime of service to the cause of organised Labour has ended with the death of the Prime Ministei, the Rt. Hon. Michael Joseph Savage, at the age of 68 years. His career has probably been as romantic as that of any modern British politician. Mr. Savage was not born to high office, but through the tenacious pursuit of an ideal he won his way from the humble place of farmer's boy to that of the leader of a Government and one of His Majesty's Privy Councillors. Few New Zealand Prime Ministers entered office with a greater asset of public goodwill on personal grounds than was enjoyed by Mr. Savage when his party swept into power in November, 1935. He had held the esteem and affection of the people ever since, maintaining a reputation for sincerity and integrity which none could challenge.
