CLEARING WILLOWS
STREAM AT OTOROHANGA WORK ALONG 17 MILES [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Tuesday Wit.li i !io object of improving the quality of an extensive area of land in the Mangaoronga and Waimiihi districts, and to minimise flooding, the Works Department has undertaken a scheme for the clearing of the Mangaoronga Stream, Otorohanga, of willow trees. A large caterpillar tractor, fitted with a double drum winch, is employed to pull the willows out by the roots. The work will extend over' 17 miles of the river's length. The blockage caused by the willows lias resulted in the land in the vicinity becoming waterlogged and sour and in frequent flooding.
