BASKETBALL Close competition marked the two remaining basketball matches of tho University tournament played at the Canterbury University Collece courts. After its win against Canterbury, the Auckland team became winner of tho basketball shield with a total of IVj points, having won all its matches. Canterbury, Victoria and Otago- had V/ 3 points each. Canterbury met Auckland in the first gamo and, in spite of Auckland's outstanding combination shown in all its previous matches, Canterbury offered tho keenest resistance Auckland had yet had. Apart from Miss H. Thompson's persistent accuracy in goal-shoot-ing for Auckland, play was not marked by any outstanding goal work and the main features wero lively field play and quick, scientific passing. So close was the match made by Canterbury's strong defence that the score seemed undecided until almost on time with • Ift-all. Then Auckland made a final spurt and secured three further goals to Canterbury's one. (lie final score being: Auckland, IK: Canterbury, 11. Tn the match between Victoria and Otacro there was very little difference in the general standard of play, although Victoria showed considerable inaccuracy at goal. An Otago player goaled just on time to make the final score: Otago, IT; Victoria, 10. OTAGO WINS SWIMMING Otago University won the swimming shield at the inter-University tournament with a total of nine points, Canterbury and Auckland being equal second with seven points.
