CRICKET SEASON

VETERANS' MATCH CUP WON FOR FIELDING REDUCED HOURS OF PLAY The success of the recent veterans' match and the social which followed it was referred to last evening bv Mr. ft. K. Nalclcr, wln> occupied the chair at a meeting of the management committee of the Auckland Cricket Association in the absence of the chairman, Mr. W. It. I'Ve. The speaker said that the spirit of comradeship and interest revived at the gathering would do a lot of good to the game, a factor which would be of vast importance during the present critical time. The junior management committee reported that it had decided to close Hie second grade competition and play the final be(ween the section winners during the next three Saturdays. The report stated that North Shore had won the A section, while the B section had been won by West End. The final positions? of teams in the Grosvenor Cup competition for fielding were presented by the Grosvenor Cup committee. The possible points, which are allocated for punctuality and appearance, ground fielding, catching, and running between wickets, were 200, and the chairman complimented all clubs on Ihe final figures, there being only 15 points between North Shore, the winner, and Y.M.C'.A. at the bottom. Following are tho points:—North Shore, 155; Eden, lot; Grafton, Middlemore, 15:1; University. Parnell. I-1S; Ponsonby-Balmoral, 1 12; Y.M.C.A., 110. The Grafton club asked for a ruling in regard to a North Shore player who had played for the fourth grado team on the first day of the senior B series and had i played for the senior B team on the second day. Opinion was divided, several members j being of the opinion that the rule which stated that a player could not play for two teams in championship games which occupied concurrent days debarred tho player mentioned from participating in the senior B game when he had already taken part in another match on the first day. It was agreed I to refer the matter to Messrs. N. C. Snedden and L. B. Schnauer for a report at the | next meeting. A report on the colts" game between Auckland and Taranaki was submitted by Mr. H. T. Pearson, who referred to the fine exhibition given by both teams. The Ponsonby-Balmoral club intimated that, owing to enlistments and sickness among its team in the senior B grade, it would be compelled to withdraw the team. This was agreed to and permission was also given to the club to play any of its B team members in the A team. It was agreed to draw the attention of teams to the alteration in the times of I'lay ' for the forthcoming three Saturdays. Next ' Saturday play will cease at it. 15 p.m. and ton the 'following two Saturdays at 5.1.> p.m. Congratulatory letters were received from the Otago and Canterbury Associations upon Auckland's success in the recent I lunkei Shield series. »

SUBURBAN ASSOCIATION REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES 1 A suggestion that more representative games should be played away from the Domain was made by Mr. N. Goldsworthy at last evening's meeting of the Auckland Citv and Suburban Cricket Association. He said experience on different types of wickets was essential for young players, and it would be a great encouragement to arrange more outside, competition for the representative team. The chairman, Mr. J. Ball, supported the suggestion, and it was decided to pay more attention to representative matches in the future. . A protest by the Transport Club against Harbour Board on the grounds that the latter club played B. Donaldson, an unregistered player, was deferred for consideration. Tt was pointed out that a game had already been awarded to the Brjxton Club on similar grounds. However, no protest fee was lodged by the Transport Club and, further, Harbour Board had not heen advised of the protest in accordance with tho rules. Following complaints, which were denied in committee against a second grade team, if was decided to appoint two official umpires to control the match between T?.V. and Suburbs at Victoria Park next Saturday. Messrs. B. V. Booth and A. J. Gall.v are to be the umpires Subject to confirming information as to the regrading status of J. Mc.Ghie. Green Lane, it was decided to award Roskill B full match points as the result of a protest on the grounds that McGhie had not been regraded from senior grade.
