AVOIDING WASTE
AN ENTERPRISING BOROUGH USE FOR OLD ENVELOPES [from our own correspondent] LONDON, March 1 When the Minister of Supply, Mr. Burgin, arifl 50 colleagues from the House of Commons sat down to luncheon at Tottenham Town Hall recently they found that the menu cards before them were stamped and addressed envelopes which had been through the post, some more than once, and now, cut on three sides, were serving a new and pleasant purpose. Thus was one possible outlet for waste paper brought neatly to their notice. Mr. Burgin's card was an envelope in which as Minister he had sent a letter on salvage to the Tottenham Corporation. The cards bore two timely slogans: "Don't waste paper'' and "We can't scrap without scrap." Earlier the party had visited the salvage works at Tottenham and seen why it is that there is no longer any waste material in the borough. Every ounce of refuse collected is turned to profitable use. Before the war the scheme showed a big reduction in the cost of collection and disposal of refuse; to-day, on an expanded scale, it is a work of national importance.
