NEEDS OF SOLDIERS
ARCHBISHOP'S OPINION NEW CATHEDRAL QUESTION OBSTACLES DUE TO WAR Claims of the forces to the generosity of the people were mentioned last night by Archbishop Averill during a farewell gathering arranged by the parishioners of St. Mary's Cathedral. He was outlining the work that had been done to make a start with the new cathedral, and said the present, when people's attention was focussed on war efforts, was hardly the time to make requests for donations. "No matter what we may think of war as such," said the archbishop, "now that we have this one on our hands we have to see it through. And we have to look after our soldiers and see that their spiritual and other needs are filled."
People must attend to the physical, mental and spiritual requirements of the forces, he continued. The last should not be overlooked, and that was why the Church of England had stipulated that in the huts being built for the Church Army, provision should be made for a chapel. Of the cathedral, Archbishop Averill said that all had been done that could he done. Plans were now ready, but the present time was scarcely suitable for their transmission to England for adjudication. He realised that soino people felt that not enough had been done, but he knew what he was talking about when he said that., having regard for the obstacles faced, nothing had not been done.
