RELIEF LABOUR

REVISED CONDITIONS WITHDRAWAL OF SUBSIDIES CONSIDERATION AT ONEHUNCA Revised conditions J'or subsidised Inborn - under scheme 13 were presented to tlie Onehunga Borough Council last b,v the Department of Labour, which intimated that the subsidies granted this year could uot again ho made available, and local bodies were requested to state the maximum proportion of the daily wage they could meet. A list of works ineligible for subsidy included loan expenditure, metal supplies, maintenance of gardens, lawns, paths and recreation grounds and clearing streets of weeds. The Minister of Labour, the Hon. J l . C. Webb, notified tliat all fit single men were being withdrawn from scheme T.'i and would be required to accept country work under scheme 4b. Other single men, said the Minister, were being withdrawn, owing to an insufficiency of work for married men,, whose greater responsibility necessitated their being given preference. The Onehunga School Committee has been advised that subsidised labour employed on the school grounds is to cease on March 30 and that if further scheme 13 labour is required for developmental work, application must be made to the Department of Education. After discussion the council decided that the question be fully considered at a .special meeting on Monday and that in the nieantjme various subcommittees prepare "data relating to necessary works and the money available in order to accurately present the council'.-, case before- the Local Bodies' Association on April 4. when it was expected joint action would be taken.

The Mayor. ."Mr. A. Garside, mentioned that the question would have to be gone into very carefully, as the council employed more men than any of the other boroughs.
