THE WORKING OF CARGO
INTERVENTION AT AUCKLAND NO APPROVAL BY UNION OPERATIONS STILL HELD UP Control of cargo work on the Auckland waterfront was assumed fcy the Government in an Order-in-Council issued yesterday morning. This decision was conveyed to members of the Auckland branch of the Waterside Union at a special meeting by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, and the Minister of Supply, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan. It failed to receive an endorsement from a large meeting, which after two hours' discussion, adjourned until eight o'clock this morning. Under the Government's plan Mr. R. E. Price, Conciliation Commissioner at Auckland, was appointed controller of waterfront operations. Arrangements for Government control had not been completed yesterday but in the meantime members of the union will be offered work on the basis of the present award conditions and pay. Mr. Webb announced that State control will continue until the completion of a proposed system of co-operative | employment.
