MARKETING OF FISH
MR. PICOT'S ULTIMATUM REJECTION IN DUNEDIN [BY TFXEGR.vrn —FRF.SS ASSOCIATION]. DUNEDIN, Monday The local fishing industry refused at a meeting on Saturday night to accept an ultimatum from Mr. F. R. Picot, Director of Marketing, that the auction market must cease and a system of fixed prices be instituted. T his decision was conveyed by Mr. Sliced, a member of the Fish Advisory Committee, who refused to discuss anything except the amounts for a system of fixed prices. One speaker, who stated he was satisfied the Government would not inter-* fere with the auction system in spite of Mr. Picot, asked why, since retailers and producers were asked to evolve an efficient system, their decision had not been forwarded to the controller by the advisory committee. Mr. Sliced replied that the decision was not unanimous. It was ultimately resolved: "In view of the satisfactory arrangement between fishermen, two wholesalers and retailers, embodying a system of fixed prices on a full market and an auction system on a scarce market, this meeting respectfully declines to enter into any discussion which would alter the svstem until it has had a fair trial."
