TAXI LICENCES
LIMITATION OF NUMBER AUTHORITY'S ATTITUDE Applications for new taxi-cab licences would not be granted in the future, unless there was good reason for doing so, said the Number 1 Transport Licensing Authority, Mr. E. .J. Phelan, at yesterday's sitting of the authority. In view of the necessity for saving petrol consumption, it would create chaos if licences were granted to all who asked for them. Applications were heard yesterday lor licences in districts outside the Auckland metropolitan area. In the case of applicants from the North Shore boroughs, Mr. Phelan suggested that they should hold a conference among themselves with a view to curtailing expense. Stating that it was desirable to gain uniformity, Mr. Phelan reserved his decision in cases where the question of fares arose.
