MOTOR-CARE ATTACKED
COURT CENSURES SOLDIER An incident concerning an attack on a motor-car by a group of soldiers after a disturbance in Quay Street 011 Sunday, January 28, was recalled in the Police Court yesterday, when a soldier, Ernest Cleveland "Watson (Mr. McCarthy), was charged with disorderly behaviour. He pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector Pender said the ear stopped in Queen Street near Vulcan Lane to pick up a man who had earlier addressed a Communist meeting in Quay Street. Soldiers surrounded the ear, and began "to.put the boot in. Defendant was identified as one of the offenders. Counsel said accused's actions could only be ascribed to the earlier disturbance, where feelings ran high. Accused said lie did not touch tincar. and his officer escort said be sympathised with young soldiers who could not bear being jeered at. "There is 110 suggestion that lie was insulted," said the magistrate. Mr. F. H. Lcvien. "The soldier should behave himself the same as a civilian.' He was fined £1 and costs £1 Is.
