COLUMN OF SMOKE
FIRE IN WAITAKERES . BURNING-OFF OPERATIONS A column of smoke rising above the Waitakeres and visible from Auckland during the greater part of yesterday caused considerable interest in the city and suburbs, many people thinking that, from the volume and colour of the smoke, the-fire had spread to the bush. Caused by burning-off operations on a farm near Waitakere on the road to Bethell's, the smoke, in the absence of a strong wind, rose straight in the air and could be seen for many miles. The fire, which was well under control all the time, was confined to about 40 acres, part of a section of 200 acres of hill-country on which thick tea-tree had been felled. The land is bounded on one side by the West Coast Road from Waitakere, and on the other by a stream which runs down from the Waitakere dam through the Cascades valley. At no stage was the fire near the City Council reserves, and no damage was done. The rest of the tea-tree will be burned off at a later date.
