COLONEL BELL'S POST QUARTERMASTER-GENERAL MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS [by TELEGRAPH —rRESS association] WELLINGTON. Thursday It is announced that Colonel P. H. Bell, New Zealand Staff Corps, has been appointed Quartermaster-General at Army headquarters and third military member of the Army Board, vice Colonel Miles, avlio has been seconded for duty with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Major W. R. Burge, New Zealand Staff Corps, has been appointed Director of Ordnance Services and granted the temporary rank of lieutenantcolonel. Major C. W. Salmon, New Zealand temporary staff, has been appointed Deputy-Quartermaster-General, Army Headquarters, Wellington, and will hold the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Colonel Sir Hugh Acland has been appointed assistant-Director of Medical Services and officer commanding the New Zealand Medical Corps, southern military district. Major M. B. M. Tweed has been appointed to a corresponding position for the central military district.

NEW OFFICERS TWO FURTHER COMMISSIONS ANOTHER ALL BLACK Another former All Black, G. A. H. Bullock-Douglas, is one of the two additional northern military district members of the secorld advanced training course at Trentliam who have been granted commissions as second lieutenants. The other appointment is that of C. S. Caddie. Both have been posted to the 21st (Auckland) Battalion at Papakura. The two new officers were among a party of 13 non-commissioned officers chosen from the infantry battalion at Papakura to take the advanced training course. The others will continue their course, it having been decided to commission at present only those required for the second echelon. Thus, unless a few more are found to be needed for the 21st (Auckland) Battalion, the remaining prospective infantry officers will be kept on advanced training until requirements for the third echelon are determined.

MAXIMUM EFFORT APPEAL TO ALL PEOPLE MR. FRASER'S RECRUITING TOUR [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] TIMARU, Thursday The deputy-Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Fraser, accompanied bv MajorGeneral J. E. Duigan, Chief of the General Staff, continued their recruiting tour when they addressed a large gathering in Timaru to-night. The rally was preceded by a parade in which three bands, South African veterans, returned soldiers, D Company of the First Canterbury Regiment, and two Timaru members of the crew of the Achilles took part. The deputyMayor, Mr. P. B. Foote, presided. Mr. Fraser welcomed the presence of the seamen from the Achilles, and referred to the great part played by the New Zealand ship in the battle with the Graf Spee. He dealt at length with the part New Zealand had to play in the struggle to overthrow Nazism, and appealed to every citizen to do the utmost in their power to protect all that was worth while in life. Not with hesitancy, but with an assurance of victory, all must throw themselves into the conflict until victory was assured.

MAORI BATTALION GIFTS FROM ROTARY MOVEMENT [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] PALMERSTON NORTH, Thursday As a tribute from the Rotary movement of the Dominion and Suva to the native race, and in particular to those members of it going overseas to fight, two handsome cups which will be used for inter-company competitions within the battalion were handed over to Lieutenant-Colonel G. Dittmer, commanding officer of the Maori Battalion, to-night.
