DIPLOMA WINNERS

CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION ARTS AND CRAFTS SECTION PRESENTED BY LADY GALWAY [li V TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Wednesday A pleasant gathering took place in the lecture hall of the women's court of tlie Centennia Exhibition this afternoon, when Her Excellency, Viscountess Gal way, presented diplomas to successful exhibitors in the arts and crafts section. Lady Galway, who was wearing a suit of beige wool marocain, with a floral blouse and a brown hat of light summer felt, was met and escorted to the stage by the Mayoress, jMrs. T. C. A. Hislop, who is president of the women's section; Mrs. A. S. Mitchell, chairwoman of the arts and crafts committee; and Mrs. C. P. Hainsworth, honorary organising secretary of the women's section.

After the diplomas had been presented, Lady Galway congratulated all who had helped in any way in the Organising of the women's section. Although the proceedings dealt with the arts and crafts section, she felt she would like to speak for a moment about the women's section in general and pay special tribute to the North Island Pioneer Hut and the South Island Pioneer Room. These, she considered, were among the most attractive features of the whole exhibition. They gave a charming picture of bygone days, and helped to make people appreciate those days before the advent of petrol pumps, sealed roads and the "uglification" of the countryside. The pioneer exhibits brought home a picture of greater simplicity and living.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, Lady Galway and the official party were the guests at afternoon tea of the directors of the exhibition. Among the diplomas were several which were presented to Auckland exhibitors. They included: .Miss H. A. Wiseman, second award for copper plaque; Miss Wiggs, second award for one cushion piece in weaving and spinning section; Mrs. E. M. White, first award in miniature section (Governor Hobson); Mrs. Higgins, first award in needle painting.
