FAT STOCK SALES

PRICES AT WESTFIELD BRIGHTER TONE RULES IMPROVEMENT IN MUTTON The tone of the market at the Westfield fat stock sales yesterday was a littlo brighter, improvements on late rates being shown in several classes. Prices for cows and heifers ill the beef section were lifted slightly, while all classes of prime sheep improved two shillings a head. Light-weight vealers also advanced in price. Other classes remained firm at recent quotations.

An averago yarding of beef of varying quality sold under a steady demand. Prices for cows and heifers were slightly in advance of late rates in some cases. Top price for steers was 5s more at £l4 15s, while cows and heifers made to £lO 155,. as . against £lO ]os at the previous sale, and £lO 2s Gd a fortnight ago.

Steady Sale for Calves Values for all prime sheep in an averago sized yarding rose 2s to 3s a. head and a good sale resulted. Wethers sold to 33s and ewes to 28s 9d. Last week's best quotations were 30s and 23s 6d, respectively. Bidding was strong for an average entry of lambs and full late rates were maintained. Top price was the same at 30s. There was a steady sale for a medium yarding of calves and values for small prime vealers were slightly better. Other quotations remained firm. "Runners were quoted to £8 Is, as against £7 7s od, while vealers made to £5 'ls, compared with £4 15s at the last sale.

In the pig section baconers remained firm on late rates, while porkers showed a very slight improvement over last week's lowered levels. Baconers were quoted at 6id per lb. and porkers at 6kl to 7. J ,d, the same as last week. Comparison of Quotations

The quality of ox beef was not up to the usual standard. Competition was steady and prices showed little or no alteration on last week's sale. Cows and heifers were penned in smaller numbers, and, like ox, showed little alteration. ADDINGTON MARKET [BY TELKCIf APJT —-PRESS ASSOCIATION'] CH RISTCHURCH, Wednesday There was again a heavy entry of sheep at the Addington market, about 17,000 of the 28,000 forward being breeding ewes. These had been selling at steadily reducing prices at the fairs, but to-day there was a sharp recovery, values being better than at the last Addington sale by Is fid a head for most classes. In a number of cases, best Southland two-tooth Romney-cross sold to 40s 6d; North Island, to 34s Od; Canterbury, to 37s 3d; local small mouth, to '2ls. Fine wools sold to 21s for four-year average sorts. Fat lambs sold up to schedule rates for better sorts, but light lambs were slightly easier. One of the principal works is not operating on account of flood damage. Fat sheep comprised a large entry of 8000 head, and. after the first part of the sale, values cased up by to Is Od for export ewes and Is for better classes. Good wethers sold at from 20s to 295; tops, to 34s 9d; station wethers, to L7s; best ewes, 22s to 2 Is; tops, to 27s (Id; export sorts, 10s to 10s. Fat cattle were in over-supply and there was a slight casing in all classes. Best steers sold at from £'ll 30s to £lO, with a few tops to £2O. Most of the steers were of medium class, and ranged from £l2 to £l4. Best cows made from £!) to £lO, and heifers 20s more. Fat pigs sold erratically. Porkers were weaker by 3s to 4s a head, but choppers were better and baconers unchanged. STORTFORD LODGE ENTRY [BY TELEGKAI'H —PRESS ASSOCIATION] HASTINGS, "Wednesday A short yarding of fat cattle at Stortford Lodge was responsible for a sharp rise in prices, which was not a true indication of the trend of the market. Butchers, who had not adequate supplies, were compelled to buy whatever was offered, with the result that all classes sold strongly. The store cattle entry was once again small, comprising a few pens which sold with difficulty. The fat sheep entry was also small and, as was the case last week, butchers paid well for all quality pens. The store offering met a quiet market, only top pens selling well. Medium entries met a dragging demand and the sale throughout was dull.
