FEDERAL WAR LOAN

.£9,000,000 SUBSCRIBED FIRST DAY'S RESPONSE CO-OPERATION OF THE PUBLIC (Received March 2, 12.50 a.m.) CANBERRA, March 1 The acting-Federal Treasurer, Mr. P. Spender, announced this evening that there had been a magnificent and widespread response to the Commonwealth war loan of £18.000,000, which opened to-day. As a result more than half of the sum required had been subscribed when business ceased this evening. Mr. Spender emphasised that the fact that more than £9,000,000 had been obtained already was eloquent testimony that the people of Australia had resolved wholeheartedly to cooperate with the Government's war effort. Several assurance companies and some financial institutions had contributed an aggregate of £2,500,000.
