LONG SERVICE ENDS
EMPLOYEE OF HERALD MR. J. /. CRAWFORD RETIRES After 43 years' service with the New Zealand Herald, Mr. J. J. Crawford, head cashier, retired yesterday on pension. Mr. Crawford entered the employ of Wilson 'and Horton, Limited, in October, 1896, as a junior clerk. For over ten years he was in the advertis- . ing department, rising to the position of chief clerk there. For nearly two years in the Great War period he was acting accountant. Mr. Crawford was the first secretary of the committee, and his eldest son was the tchool's first dux. As a young man he was a keen footballer and, with Mr. Harry Cleal. founded the former Auckland, Church Rugby Union, under the presidency of Archdeacon (then Canon.) G. MacMdrray. » A farewell gathering was held at the Herald' office yesterday afternoon. The general manager, Mr. J. M. Hardcastle, who presided, spoke appreciatively of Mr. Crawford's loyal service I to the company, and made a presentation to him on behalf of the staff. Mr. Crawford suitably replied.
