PETITION OF RIGHT

HOUSEMAID'S CLAIM A claim for compensation in the form of a petition of right was brought by Mrs. Lucv Brophv, hotel employee (Air. Haigh), against the Crown (Air. G. S. R. Meredith), in the Arbitration Court yesterday. The petitioner claimed that she was employed as head housemaid at the Waitomo Government Hostel on February 28, 1939, when she suffered a double fracture of the right ankle which totally incapacitated her until July 18. Her earnings were £3 7s 6d weekly and she claimed £45, made up of 20 weeks' pay at £2 5s a week. The Crown denied liability on the ground that the accident occurred outside the scope of the suppliant's employment, that if it occurred at all it was after her employment had been terminated, and the Crown also alleged that she was under the influence of liquor at the time. _ * The case was adjourned until Friday.
