Tosh (Goillop) was clear of Sir Tommy (Winder) and Viteinent (llain) at the end of half a mile in 52 2-ss, after* running tho first three furlongs in rwi l-ss. Knnauga is making steady progress, and may make early amends for recent disappointments. Gay Rosette, the two-year-old filly by Whiri wind from Diversion, Commemoration (llain) and Rose Vaal (Winder) _were associated over three furlongs in ,'l.s. Abbe.\ King, who is bearing an improved appearance, was exercised on the inside grass. He is an acceptor for the Bombay Handicap at Pukekohe, and should give a good account of himself. HAWERA TRAINING PRETTY' LASS GOES FAST WINSOME LU WORKS SOUNDLY FLAMBERGE LEADS WAR LAP [BY TF.T.KG RAl'H —OWN CORK KSrONnKNT] HAWERA, Thursday Candidates lor the Rangitikei meeting vcre allotted their linal gallops at Hawcra this morning. The plough and the course proper were in good order for the first two gallops, hut heavy rain then developed and the plough soon became too heavy for use. On the plough Pretty Lass (Ryan) and Fiancee (McDonald) ran half a mile in ■>() l-ss, Pretty Lass being in front throughout. A repetition of her track form would make Pretty Lass difficult to dispose of on Saturday. She will be ridden by R. W. Shaw. On the grass Flamberge ißyan), with a good pull in the weights, showed the way to War Lap (Toki) over five furlongs in 1.5 'J-5. Flamberge is not without prospects in the maiden event at Bulls, where he will have the services of A. Jenkins. Winsome Lu (Reilly) defeated Notium (Cole) by a couple of lengths at the conclusion of seven furlongs in 1.30, running the first half-mile in 51 l>-5s Although she was in receipt of about two stone, Winsome l.u accomplished her task in pleasing fashion, (irawing attention to her future prospects. Lickem Defeats Bidens

Tiickem (Holland) easily accnunled for Bidens (Ryan) at the end of five furlongs in I .<i Recent racing has improved Lickem and hi- can be relied upon for a solid performance oil Saturday. J. Williamson, who piloted him at the Egmont and Opunako meetings, will again take the mount. Gitann Lass (Holland) did an easy five furlongs in 1.0 Student Prince (Sexton) occupied 1.7 over the same ground. He has built up considerably since the holidays and should continue to pay his way. in spito of the high mark he lias now attained in the weights. Barry Bo.v (Kyan) displayed his usual brilliance over the early stages of half a mile with Raidora (Holland), hut. he stopped quickly in the straight, and his companion finished practically on terms in ,*il .",-.">s. A four-year-old mare by Night Raid from Doree, Raidora has been lightly raced to date and looks likely to pay her way. Gold Grip (Toki) and Resingold (Grindlay) were not hurried to complete five furlongs in 1.0 iS-~>. Val Bay ißeilly) and Calliope (Graham) sprinted threo furlongs smartly in :S7 '_'-.*>s. Armacourt was not extended while running four furlongs in She is engaged rit Rangitikei, but. judging by her disappointing displays at Tlawera recently. she will have to improve a good deal to have a chance. Ramleh Shades Val Pere Ramleh (Keilly) shaded Val Pere (Graham) over the concluding stages nf six furlongs in 1 1. Ramleh revelled in the going, but Val Pere is not a good track worker, and is also not partial to soft going. However, the Beau Pere three-year-old is one of the most consistent hacks in commission, and looks a good handicap performer in the making. Tn his last ten starts he has recorded a win and seven seconds. The Woodville winners, Chief Lord and Air Flight, were out doing light work. They took no harm from their racing and should do well. Air Flight is to contest the Taranaki Stakes next, week and will be ridden bv AV. J. Mud ford. Although she figures among the acceptors for the hack sprint at Rangitikei, Sea Link is unlikely to make the trip. Present intentions are to reserve her for the Fending Faster meeting.
