£IOO,OOO APPEAL

THE FIGHTING ,SERVICES AUCKLAND. ORGANISATION iiM.C.A-. AND SALVATION ARMY ; j WARM SUPPORT" EXTENDED . iThe fighting services welfare appeal fdr £IOO,OOO conductcdiby the Y.M.C. A-. aijid the .Salvation Army wa.<s launched successfully in Auckland' last night, when a representative .meeting of .citizens in the 'Town Hall council chamber gave unanimous approval and wholehearted support to the plan of 'campaign. A large central. committee, which included representatives of city organisations, Churches arid suburban boroughs, was appointed to organise the appeal; The Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, presided over an attendance of about 100.

Explaining how tho appeal would bo conducted, the Mayor said the Y.M.C.A. and tho Salvation Army had been appointed authorised collectors for tho National Patriotic Fund Board and agents of the board for expenditure, with the provision that no money could be spent without the board's prior approval and in terms of a budget submitted to it. The board would place at the disposal of these two bodies such sums as were shown to be necessary to ensure the welfare of members of tho armed forces on the lines of Y.M.C.A. and Salvation Army work, irrespective of tho total amount they might raise by this or other appeals. No Conflict in Appeal

There was no conflict and there should be.no confusion between the activities of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Council and the present national fund collection of the Y.M.C.A. and Salvation Army, continued Sir Ernest. In order to "give the national collectors free scope, the active resumption of the provincial appeal for finance had been deferred. Although the national appeal was subject to the regulatibns, it was not intended, in order to avoid confusion, to use the machinery 6f the provincial Eatriotic council. Sir Ernest concluded y appealing.to citizens to support the campaign wholeheartedly. The fact that money raised by the campaign would be made available by the National Patriotic Fund Board to the organisation as it was required was emphasised by Air, W. Cahlor Mackay, Auckland president of the Y.M.C.A. Mr. Mackay quoted a letter signed by the secretary-treasurer of the board stating that the appeal would help, men in the forces at home and abroad. Donations would be devoted entirely to the Salvation Army and Y.M.C.A. to be used for tho welfare of New Zealand's fighting men. The reputation of both organisations, continued the letter, was a guarantee that the money would be spent wisely and well. Some Large Donations

Mr. Mackay said the good work do 110 by the two organisations in the last war resulted in their solection by tho Government to carry it out during the present hostilities. An appeal for funds would be made in tho city and suburbs on March 15, and cheques totalling £9OO had already been received from the following donors:—Sir Ernest and Lady Davis, £100; A. H. Nathan and Company, £200; John Burns and Company, £200; Bond and Bond, Limited, £200; and Frank M. Winstorie, Limited, £2OO. Mr. Mackay suggested that Auckland and suburbs "should aim for a fund of £25,000. " 1

Brigadier A. J. Sutcr, Salvation Army officer commanding the Auckland district, referred to the co-operation existing between the Y.M.C.A. and the Salvation Army in the war effort.

At a subsequent meeting of tho central committoe, Mr. H. B.,.Burnett was appointed chairman and Mr. C. F. Garratt honorary treasurer. The Mayoress, Lady Davis, was appointed convener of the women's committee to conduct the street appeal.

PAPAKURA EFFORT TO RAISE £2OO At a meeting of Papakura residents presided over by the Mayor, Mr. S. Evans, it was decided to co-opcrate in the joint appeal of the Salvation Army and the Young Men's Christian Association for the fighting services welfare, and to endeavour to raise £2OO. The area is to include Papakura, Hunua, Ponga, Opaheke, Karaka, Ararimu, Paparimu, Drury, Runciman, Ramarama and part of Ardinore. The Papakura borough was divided into nine areas, the meeting electing a representative to take charge of each area. The Mayor announced that the borough council had decided «to grant permission for a street appeal for the fund on March 15. WHANGAREI CANVASS SUM OF £425 AIMED AT [from our OWN correspondent] WHANGAREI, Tuesday In opening a meeting of Whangarei citizens convened to promote the national patriotic appeal, the Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, stressed the different objects of the National Patriotic Council and the Provincial Council. - The national appeal for £IOO,OOO was for comforts for the troops overseas, while tho Provincial Council was responsible for, the troops while in New Zealand. The handling of tho funds overseas was to be left to the Y.M.C.A. and tho Salvation Army, said Mr. Jones, but ho suggested that a liaison officer should be appointed as between the people of the Dominion and the troops overseas. On the present scale of allocations, Whangarei's share of tho £IOO,OOO to be raised was £425. Mr. Jones then outlined proposals for a liouso-to-house canvass of the town,, or alternatively that all bo circularised.
