PIGS FOR EXPORT DECLINE IN KILLINGS [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT j[ . HAMILTON, TiUsday With an increased export of pig carcases desfred .-is part of the Empire war effort, concern is felt at a comparativa decline in the . killings of fat. pigs. ; It was stated to-day tliat fillings rorx export up to the end of January were down by 35 per. cent and were lower in weight by 21 per cent. - The chairman of directors of the New Zealand Co-operative Pig Marketing Association, Mr. W. A. Phillips, said that, in view of Britain's urgent need for increased supplies, the position must be considered serious.. However, although the Dominion killiiigs had declined, the association's activities on a percentage basis showed an increase on last year.. Many-pig producers were making full use of the supplies of cheap Australian barley, but on the whole farmers could not be said to be takingadvantage of the present opportunity as thev should. v . Mr. Phillips said it was difficult to fix the causes for the decline in killings, but one principal factor was the difficulty experienced in securing competent farin labour. In cases where adequate labour could not be obtained, 'pig production was the first aspect of d&iry farming that suffered.
