IMPORT CONTROL

HAMILTON MEETING NO ACTION BY GOVERNMENT DISSATISFACTION EXPRESSED [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Friday Dissatisfaction with the Government's delay in taking any direct action upon the resolutions in regard to import restrictions which were carried at. the mass meeting a.t Hamilton early ill December was expressed by members of the organising committee, which met in Hamilton yesterday. It was decided to take no further action until the Government gave its consideration to the matters raised. The Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, wrote stating that copies of the resolutions carried at the meeting had been noted for the consideration of the Government. The Minister of Customs, the Hon. W. Nash, said that just as soon as it was found possible to do so relaxation would be made, ol any restrictions which it had been found necessary to impose under the existing circumstances.

In a further letter to the Minister, the committee stated that it understood that the Auckland Amalgamated Society of Shop Assistants had waited upon the Minister requesting that consideration should be given to the establishment of an advisory committee of practical businessmen to co-operate with the Government with a view to reducing existing anomalies and establishing a more workable system of import control. This suggestion was strongly favoured by the Hamilton committee. In reply, Mr. iVasb said that the points raised by the shop assistants would be considered by the Government.

The following permanent committee was set up yesterday to watch the interests of all organisations which supported the mass meeting, with a viewto securing close relationship between producer and businessman:—Chairman, Mr. W. .J. Livingstone; secretary, Mr. A. J. Yendell; treasurer, Mr. J. R. Henderson; executive committee, Messrs. N. IT. Hooker, A. M. Bisley and I{. H. Anderson; geueral committee, Messrs. W. J.
