FIFTY YEARS AGO

AUSTRALIAN FEDERATION The part which New Zealand was to take in the movement for Australian federation was the subject of great concern 50 years ago, the following being an extract from the New Zealand Heiiald of February 10. IS9° : ... "The instinctive desire of the New Zealand people will be to join the Federation. To stand out will be distasteful, and nothivig but clear necessity wilJ satisfy them with such a position. If we can reasonably form part of the Dominion wo shall gladly do so; if not, some other means must be found for maintaining with it the political and commercial relations which all will desire. "In any case we shall cordially hail the Dominion, which we believe to be near at hand, as the greatest forward step ever made by our race in these seas. It is the birth of a new nation, which cannot fail hereafter to exercise a potential voice in the many questions of political and commercial importance which occupy attention both in the old world and the new.".
