A fine, performance throughout the tournament was^ capped off by the Onehunga team skipped by .T. Mingins this afternoon when' it captured the title in the Hotorua Bowling Club's annual fours tournament after n first-class display. Matamata, skipped by Stewart, was unlucky to lose 011 the 21st head.
The quarter-finals, which were started early in the morning, were productive of good bowls, although the high wind which has harassed competitors for tlio whole of the week Was again in evidence. The greens were heavy after the downpour last nights Fortunately tho weather remained fine, allowing the tournament to bo concluded in good time. \. : s,. <1 ■ Decisive Victory Stewart scored a decisive win over West End (Neerlham) In the morning, although up to, the 28th head tho match wns very cren. The final score was 20 —10. Another poplilar victory-.was that of Mingins' four over tho other Onehunga team skipped b.v Robertson, the" scoro being 24- —10 after Mingins had been down 2 —12 on- the fifth bond. Determined play by the Hamilton four under Pilkington brought* thorn a victory over the, strong Auckland team skipped by Parker, the score being 21—10, while Roberts, of Carlton, skipped his team to a comfortable win, over M. Walker, of Auckland. Play in the semi-finals was exoeptlonailly oven in both games. Pilkington, by vlgoirous driving tactics, obtained an early advantage over Mingins, From the 17th head onward, however, the Hamilton players wcro unable to improvo their position, and Mingins finally won 18 —17. Carlton (Roberts) and Matnmata (Stewart) kept the scoring even throughout their mntch, neither side gaining any decided advantage. On tho 10th head Roberts took the lead at 10—13. On the 21st head Stewart required two to win, and 110 gained these points llixrtsclf by splendid drawing. ," : i Mingins and Stewart took tho green for tho final before a crowd of about 200. The .initiative was taken by W. Ketnil, who ran tip a bowl to touch the jack. Mingins gailned another, putting Onehunga two up on the board. Stewart, drawing two close bowls at tho finish of the next head, evened the score and on tho third head Matamata took tho lead. Fortunes Fluctuate Fortune fluctuated Tip to the 11th head, when Onehunga held a useful Joad at 11 —8. Mingins and his supports continued, to score freely up to tho 15th head, at which silage (hey held an advantage of seven points. maia then staged a splendid recovery, and at the finish of tho 20th head was on oven terms, with tho score at 10-ali, 011 tho Jast head Sutherland (Onehunga) sent up a nice bowl to lie only a few inuhes from the jack, Gibson (Matamata) played to tho other side, but was unable to lie closer. It was finally left to Stewart, who attempted to retrieve the situation. With his first lie brushed Sutherland's bowl, but not hard enough to move it away from the jack, and with the other lie drove but was unsucCGSSflll. The members of the Onehunga team were E. V*. Sutherland. W, Kerns. J. Kerr and J. .Mingins. The Matamata team comprised A. Young, F. Gibson, -A. Oates and PStewart. ' HAMILTON BOWLERS WELLINGTON VISIT PROPOSED [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Friday Owing to the petrol restrictions members, of howling clubs in South Auckland will not nlako their annual week's motor Jour this year. As an alternative they will leave by train on February 24 and will spend j the week in Wellington, viniting the Exhibition in the mornings and playing against city and suburban clubs in the afternoons. A programme of sight-seeing trips and entertainments is being arranged by the Wellington bowling clubs. It is expected thai a considerable number of South Auck- j land bowlers and their wives will make the trip.
