HIGHWAY TO WAIUKU
ALTERNATIVE ROUTES COUNTY COUNCIL'S VIEW - [from our own correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Tuesday The question whether the direct route from Auckland to Waiuku, which is via Brown's Gully, should be declared a main highway and tar-sealed before the present highway, which is ra Patuinahoe and Titi Corner, was before the Franklin County Council at - a special meeting this week. Advice was received from the Main Board's representative, that the Awhitu Ratepayers' Association had made representations in favour of the Brown's Gully route, as it was shorter than the highway. A deputation of Mauku riding ratepayers waited on the meeting in support of the present highway. The council decided in favour of the present highway, and referred to the Highways Board three tenders for reconstructing and. tar-sealing it, with a conditional recommendation for the acceptance of the lowest. It also referred to the board, with a similar recommendation, two tenders for reconstructing and tar-sealing seven miles eight chains of the highway leading out of Waiuku in-the other direction, to Koliekohe, Awhitu and ~ Manukau Heads.
Instructions were given the county engineer, Mr. A. C. v ßettany, to make the necessary surveys for reconstructing and tar-sealing the PapakuraHunua highway, the Brown's Gully route for its full length from Paerata junction to Waiuku, and the PukekoliePatuniahoe Road.
