DAVIS CUP TENNIS

FINANCIAL LOSS LIKELY

POSITION OF AUSTRALIA Although Australia's tennis team brought back the Davis Cup, it may lose financially on the four, states an Australian writer. War affected the challenge round adversely. The gate was considerably less than in the previous year. Added to that, Australia was saddled with half the cost of a temporary stand, which was pulled down immediately after the fixture. In the preliminary matches against Mexico. Philippines and Yugoslavia, the "gates" were negligible. "I tendered a financial report of the tonr to tho Lawn Tennis Association, but as that body has not discussed it ,\et I cannot comment on it," said Mr. H. Hopman, the Davis Cup team's manager. "It is not postsible to state definitely whether there was a loss or a gain on the tour until an official statement is received from the United States. This is usually received about three months after the team returns home. "As far as I know, the Lawn Tennis Association has not yet received the United States statement. Another source of delay is the receipt of returns from countries played in the preliminary rounds, in this case Mexico, tho Philippines and Yugoslavia. These are not received until as long as lour or five months afterward."
