BRILLIANT GOLFER
AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION JIM FERRIER AT TITIRANGI FINE FIGURES IN AFTERNOON One of the most brilliant golfers in Australia, Jim Ferrier, was a through passenger on the Monterey, which sailed for San Prancisco last evening. Ho intends to spend some months in the United States of America, where he will play in a number of tournaments, including the American open and amateur championships. He was accompanied by Mrs. Ferrier, herself a golfer of no mean ability, and Mr. H. Campbell, a newspaper proprietor of New South Wales, who is also making the American trip.
Accompanied by the New Zealand professional champion, A. Murray, Ferrier played at Titirangi yesterday. In the morning ho had an approximate stroke round of 73, one below the standard scratch score, and Murray returned 72. In tho afternoon Ferrier wag in brilliant form, his figures for the first nine boles being as follows, the scratch score being given for the purposes of comparison:— Scratch: 1, 1, 5. 3. 5, 5, 3, 4, -1—37 Ferrier: 3, 5. 4, 3, -1, 4, 2. 3, 4—32
The pair did not complete tho round, but the form rev wiled by Ferrier was very impressive, and he should perform well overseas. Ferrier, who is 25 years of age this month, is the present open, amateur and foursomes champion of Australia. His record of successes in important events in his own country hus never been equalled, as lie has won every major title at least, once. In 1036 he toured Great Britain and was runner-up in the British amateur chqmplonship.
