ROTORUA TOURNEY ANNUAL RINKS COMPETITION SUMMARY OF SECTION PLAY : [UV TBLEGRAPII —OWN CORKKBrOXI>KK-T] j • ROTORUA, Monday ; In spito of threatening clouds in the early, morning tlio weather was fine and sunny yesterday for tlio opening of tlio 3St.li animal links tournament held by tlio Rotorua Bowling Club. Tlio greens were in excellent order, but some inconvenience was caused to competitors by a. ln'gb wind which prevailod until the lato afternoon. Tlio president of the club, Mr. J. Portman, extended a welcome to the visitors from outsido centres. A special welcome was given to. 3Tr. 33. Forrest, of Taneatun, who has attended 35 of the 37 tournaments already held and is an activo competitor in this year's fixture.
This year 55' teams, nininly from Auckland and the suburbs, entered the competition, representing i'.'l clubs. Early in the tiny promise of fine play was given by the Auckland four, skipped by Professor Maxwell Walker, and this combination went through without a loss. A similar performance was returned by the Rotorua team, skipped by E. Fowkes. in the same section, by A. .T. Leal hem's Ponsonby team, by J. Gardiner's team from Otaliuhu and by V. Little's Carlton entry. Taken generally, tlio standard of play was high and some very close matches were contested. A further three rounds will bo played to-morrow, three on Wednesday and two on Thursday. Under the rules governing the tournament, all teams with seven wins or moro will qualify for post-section knock-out play. Tlio final will probably take place on fc'rid.'iy afternoon. Huntly.—An open tournament was held by the Huntly Bowling Club, when visitors wero present from Cambridge. Franktou, Railways. Taupiri and Renown. At the conclusion of the fifth round Spiers, McGlashan and Shead qualified for the final. In the semi-final Shead lost, to Speirs. leaving the latter to meet McGlashan (Renown). McGlashan won the final. The winning team comprised Sankey, Gcddes, Cooke and McGlashan. 'Te Awamutu. —Unfavourable weather conditions interfered with play in the To Awamutu Bowling: Chili's full-rink tournament held during the week-end. Sixteen teams were present, including representatives from Te Aroha. Cambridge. Otorolianga, Oliaupo, Leamington and Putaruru. Tlio tournament was of five games and in the play-off between E. Pilkington (Otorolianga) and E. Ppllard (Putaruru), the former proved the winner.
