QUIET ON THE FRONT
SOME ARTILLERY ACTION ENTERTAINMENT OF TROOPS (Received January 20, 7.10 p.m.) LONDON. Jan. 20 The French war communique says the day on the Western Front was quiet on the whole. There was some artillery action. The German communique states: "Our Air Force carried out pursuit flights over the Western Front, and reconnaissance flights over Great Britain."
Many of Britain's best-known actors and actresses have, during the past eight weeks, taken part in entertainments in France for the benefit of the troops of the British Expeditionary Force, says the British official wireless. These shows are organised by the acting profession, and in two months 383 stage entertainments and 563 cinema performances have been seen by 460,810 men. (Received January 20, 0.35 p.m.) "British Wireless _ LONDON, Jan. 25 The second mooting of the AngloFrench Trades Union Council, representing the French Confederation of La hour and the British Trades Union Congress, was held in London to-day. M. Leon .Touhaux headed the French members, who sat in conference with the-general council of the Trades Union Congress. Welcoming the French representatives, Mr. W. Holmes, who presided, said their visit was a further demonstration of the solidarity of the French and British Labour movements, which, linked together for many years, had now been further strengthened by the war.
M. Jouhaux emphasised the unity of purpose joining the French and the British workers in the war against, Hitlerisrn, and said the French unions had thrown all their resources into the struggle and would flinch from rio effort to ensure the victory of free nations and lead to a just nnd lasting peace. Although the war called for gigantic sacrifices, these must not be allowed to obscure the need for social progress.
The conference received reports on organisation and discussed questions of prices and the cost of living and details of Labour legislation.
