LYNNDALE MEETING INTERESTING COMPETITION LEADINC ATHLETES COMPETE The most interesting inter-club competition so far this season took place at the Lynndale Club's open meeting at the cinder track last Saturday. In spite of persistent rain, there was a large entry, all the leading athletes in Auckland taking part. The track was heavy and holding. The 100 yds. was a well-fought contest, made more interesting by the fact that the backmarkers, Mansill, Emus, Raynes and McManus, gained places in their heats and were able to contest the final. Two heats were Avon in 9 4-os and one in 10s. Raynes won the final in a tight finish ofF the 2jyds. mark, neither Emus nor Mansill running as well in the final as in the heat.

The two last-named won their respective heats in tho furlong, too, but neither appeared to advantage in the final. Osmond, of Ellerslie Club, was the best of the back-markers in this event, and finished second off (iyds in 22 <l-ss. Iv. Smith, a capable and improving athlete, gained third place off the 10yds mark. The event was won by Iv. Nicholson, a last year's junior of much promise. Both Bassett and Skecn showed very creditable form. M. C. Baker reserved his effort for the 4-tOyds, but neither ho nor O. McManus, who wen( off a mark near scratch, could overtake the long handicaps set Ihein. Baker has not so far this season shown his usual form. Tho Auckland mile champion, S. J. Wade, ran exceptionally well in this event and won with ease in 51s. Second place went to the University hurdler, Day, who went off the 25yds mark with Wade.

The SBoyds event was the best contest of the meeting. From scratch A. McManus ran right through the field and was in front at the last 220 yds mark. He had tho best sprint at the finish, and won in 2m Is, which is fast time for such a heavy track. He outpaced Wade and Nugent, both of whom ran from scratch, although the former finished third, about two yards behind. McManus won the half-mile from scratch at the last open meeting. A newcomer , who performed well was N. Moselen.

Principal interest in the two miles event centred in the meeting between L. Watters, the Auckland three miles champion, and N. Ambler, second in the championship. Watters was superior on the day, defeating Ambler by about ;>oyds, but was unable to catch the Oiichunga Club runner Orange, who, although favoured with a big handicap, ran a fine race in bare feet and won. Watters finished* second. Ambler was fourth and made a very creditable showing, considering that he has been absent from the track for a considerable time.

The junior events drew keen competition. The most polished performance was that of A. Wilson, of Technical, who, striding with great power, won the 100 yds handicap and finished third in the 440 yds. A tall athlete, Wilson already appears in top form. Last year he was a favourite for the quarter-mile junior championship, but stalcncss, due to excessive training, interfered with his chances.' The Otahuhu champion, J. SmiMi, who has had many successes this seasSli, was in form again on Saturday, and finished second in the junior sprint. Although N. Marshall, who won the mile, had a big start from the scratch runner McGeehan, Marshall's stylo and stamina give promise of future good performances. In the ladies' events most leaders of the sport took part, although the Mount Albert club was not present. It is pleasing to sec Miss L. Hall, national furlong champion, regaining form. She filled third place in her heat, although giving away 21yds. It is the first time this season she has filled a place in important competition. A fit athelete on the day was Miss P. McMillan, who, from middle marks, won the 100 yds and was second in the 220 yds.
