TARANAKI FORM

CIRCUIT MEETINGS NOTIUM SHOWS STAMINA FOOTLOOSE BEST SPRINTER [by TELEGRAPH OWN CORIIESrONDENT] NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday The Taranaki holiday racing, circuit, with meetings at New Plymouth and •Stratford, produced splendid sport and interesting racing and, while 0110 or two of the fields were disappointing, they were well up to the standard of provious years. The outstanding performer was Notiuni, who showed tho best form of his career. He disappointed on the first day at New Plymouth, when he could only finish a moderate fourth, but in his subsequent races stronger horsemen were engaged, and different riding tactics adopted. In tho New Plymouth Handicap on tho second day ho put in a splendid finishing run to scoro narrowly. Any doubts regarding Notium's staying ability were dispelled by his fine finishing effort in tho Stratford Cup, when up the long straight he finished too solidly for his opponents, to win going away in decisive fashion Though beaten by Te Hai on the anal day, ho again ran very creditably, rjotium probably receives his staying ability through his dam, Makepeace, who was by Martian from Tho Hague. • Cuttlo ran one good race, and two indifferent ones. The ram Unit fell before tho New Plymouth meeting just eased the ground sufficiently for him to be able to hit out freely, and tho determined run that ho put in to snatch victory in the Christmas Handicap was full of merit. At Stratford the going was harder, and in neither of lus races did Ned Cuttle display tho samo dash. Te Hai Consistent v Tho connections of To Hai wore confident that ho would win a race on the circuit, but they had to wait until the final day at Stratford for their hopes to materialise. He was a little unlucky in tho Christmas Handicap at Now Plymouth, as had Namara not carried him out coming into tho straight ho might have just won, instead of being beaten into third place in a heads finish. The second day at Stratford Te Hai made no mistake about the Malone Memorial. He left Bronze Step at the distance and, though Isotium challenged, To Hal was not in danger of defeat. Ho was produced later in the Toko High-weight, to dead-heat with Prince To Hai was started fivo times on the circuit for a win, a dead-heat for first, two thirds and a fourth, a fine example of consistency and, a tribute to his condition. The decisivo win of Footlooso in the Douglas Handicap at Stratford stamped him as the best sprinter. He was narrowly beaten by Gay Seton at New Plymouth, but tho race worked an improvement in him, as at Stratford he did not give his opponents a chance over the final furlong. The manner in which ho won suggests that ho may be able to hold his own in the best company. Return to Form Gay Seton staged a return to his best form, winning two races nnd being second in another. Generally regarded as a horse that only showed his best on heavy tracks Gay Seton demonstrated that he is still quite at homo on top of tho ground. It was sheer gamoness that enabled him to worry Footlooso out of first placo in the Flying Handicap at New Plymouth, white in the Ngaere Handicap at Stratford ho hung on when challenged in the straight. Gay Solon may have been a triflo lucky, as Saxon Tor was going well threo lengths in front when he ran right off the course. Bronze Step made a promising debut in open company, when she filled second place in the Stratford Cup, and had her rider not lost his position going out of the back Bronze Step might easily liavo made Notium's task more difficult, as she was running on solidly at tho finish. Sho was sent out a good favourite for tho Malone Memorial on Tuesday, but her three previous races evidently proved too strenuous, as there was no dash in her finish. Bronzo Stop is a much-improved mare, who is likely to mako her presence felt in the autumn. Tho stock of Vaals. siro of Choval do Voleo and Fils do Vaals, were in tho limelight, through the deeds of tho two hacks Gold Dale and Veldette. At New Plymouth Gold Dale narrowly beat Veldotto in tho Juvenile Handicap. Gold Dale and Veldette Veldette won tho Summer Hack Handicap in easy fashion, and repeated the performance on tho first day at Stratford. She is a galloper above the average, who should soon win. her Way out of the hack class, j It was unfortunate that Gold Dale's rider I was caught napping at the start of the Douglas Handicap at Stratford, as it would j have. been intorosting to see how ho would] fared against Footlooso. As it was Gold ! Dale lost so much ground, that ,his. chances ; were extinguished. With J. Chajplin in the •safldlo'sin the Kaponga Hack Handicap on Tuesday, Gold Dale beat his opponents in easy"' fashion, without being fully extended. Gold Dale is from Gold Dawn, who was a full-sister to the good maro Bright Glow. He will probably mako his next appearance at Treritham.
