j MID-WINTER SNOW j The most memorable featuro of the j past year's weather for most Auckland j people is the periods of bitter cold that j can't' in July and August, accompanied | sometimes by falls of snow in places j wliero it had never been recorded j betore. Early in Jul}' there was a heavy ; fall of snow on the Waitakcres, and eight degrees of frost were recorded in some of the suburbs. Later in the mouth water was frozen in taps about Auckland, and there was much snow on liign levels throughout the province. There Mas another visitation of cold on August 12, when flurries of snow were noticed as far north as Russell. The total rainfall of 1939 was so near the annual average recorded for tiie past B'j years that it exceeded it by only the 100 th of an inch. The average <s -44.81 inches. At Christinas Auckland maintained its reputation for excellent holiday weqther. Saturday, Sunday and Christmas Day itself were most attractive out-door days, and although a few showers fell early on Boxing Day they soon cleared and left tlio clay fi'no for holiday-makers. WHANGAREI RAINFALL \ TOTAL BELOW 7 AVERAGE [iJY TKI/KGIIAPII —OWN" COURKSI'ONDICNT] WIJANGAREI, Tuesday With a fall of G2.Goin., the rainfall in Whangarei during 1939 was slightly below the average yearly fall of G0.7 Bin. Rain was recorded on IGO days. The fall in December was 2.81 in., which is also slightly below tlio average for the month.
