DELICIOUS SATIRE
"IN THE CAN" A JOYOUS piece of nonsense is ZNIr. Jim Phelan's uproarious "In the Can." Many will remember the author's poignant "Lifer," with its truly dreadful prison scenes, and there arc prison scenes here, with crooks and cruelties galoi'e. But Mr. Phelan has ceased to he poignant: he is content to poke fun — at almost everything to he found in the usual detective stories, smart "playboy" films, or Soho melodramas. Arthur Millyone's devastating career, in fact, in or out of prison, on the films, in Soho bars, with "con" men or "steamers," single or married, in funds or in rags, hut always ready to hurl bottles at people who annoy him. is a delicious hit of satire. "In the Can," by Jim Phelan. (Michael Joseph.)
