The raw clay, under the fierce heat of the burning kilns, in which the processed roofing tiles are placed, assumes when burnt a hue of warm, colourful reds, in varying degrees from light terracotta to almost a rich purple. Taken at rcfndom from the kiln and placed upon the roof their charm never lessens —indeed, time serves only to mellow and enhance the natural beauty of this form of roofing. In older lands earthenware roofing tiles are a prominent feature of any residential landscape—so much so that visitors from those countries on their first visit to New Zealand remark with surprise upon the predominance of ugly tin roofs which mar the aspect of our suburbs. Nevertheless, in New Zealand there is fast becoming an appreciation of the beauty, permanence and utility of earthenware roofing tiles, and more and more we see their mellow colour tones surmounting our modern homes. An era of more permanence in our home building has dawned, and naturally this calls for the employment of materials which will definitely be free from depreciation, and that bugbear of maintenance —painting —which has always to be faced when that survival of our pioneer times, a tin roof, is used. A flourishing and progressive local industry has sprung'„ up, utilising our undoubtedly rich and suitable supplies of clay, and giving employment to men and youths, nimw forking for them an interesting education in clay work, which will undoubtedly stand them in good stead when the use of clay for many other purposes is eventually entered into in this' country. More importantly, this industry has been successfully able to reduce its cost, until to-day it is possible even for the cottage owner to enjoy the advantages of an earthenware tiled roof. After all, cost is a very important item in home building, and, when low first cost is obtainable, together with the added advantages of permanency and freedom from main—Article and illustration supplied f ~ i <vt tenance, we should confidently be able to look for every future home to be so roofed. ' Probably the most familiar type of earthenware roofing tile em- " * ployed to-day is that which'is based upon .the famous "Marseille" pattern. This type of tile; was ' evolved over a long period and particularly exploited by a number of tile works at Marseilles, France. ' This type of tile, by reason of its design, provides beauty of contour, great strength, high insurance against leakage, and, being in convenient units, is easily and economically applied., • I by Winstone Limited, Auckland. j|g||l Cost less than iron in the The "Crowning Glory" of a Tile Roof is not expensive—actually a Winstone Tile Roof is considerably cheaper than iron in the long run, and is definitely more attractive in appearance.
