NEW IRON LUNG
HOSPITAL ACQUISITION LORD NUFFIELD'S GIFT The new iron lung for the Auckland Hospital, the gift of Lord Nuffield, who offered to provide iron lungs for all hospitals in the British Empire, arrived last week and has been assembled, ready for use. The hospital now has two iron lungs, the other having been designed and constructed by tho Auckland Hospital Board's engineer, Mr. F. C. Jacobs, nearly three years ago. In tho words of Mr. Jacobs, tho new lung is a fine example of British workmanship, and the staff is well pleased with this addition to its equipment. The new iron lung is like a largo wooden box. It is used in modern hospitals for the treatment of paralysis following infantile paralysis. It can also bo used for treatment of unconsciousness following gas poisoning or poisoning from drugs. Tho iron lung constructed by Mr. Jacobs was the first Tised in New Zealand. Many patients have been treated in' it and it has definitely proved efficient in the saving of life.
