The submarine, which did not know that it had been seen, continued to cruise upon the surface. Upon receipt of the message from the fishing smack, the authorities took certain steps. Soon warships and other vessels gathered and, at a prearranged signal, rushed up and dropped, depth charges. The spectacle of searchlights flashing and the noise of the depth charges exploding brought hundreds of people, thinking there was an air raid, into the streets of a coastal town.
