CHALLENGE TO DEMOCRACY

Sir,— May I add my protest against the proposed unjustified expenditure ou a new IZB stildio and also express my support for the opinion and method suggested by Mr. R. M. Algie. The proposal to spend £70,000 on a ne'W radio station, used mostly for propaganda., at «a time when money is urgently needed for more useful and necessary projects, is another instanco of the Government's mismanagement that has brought this country to its present condition. I fail to understand how a new studio is going to help the Empire to win the war. The Government has exhorted the farmers to increase production and asked for the co-operation of all sections of the community. But the Government is the greatest obstacle to cooperation and should first of all put its own house in order. Their idea of cooperation is meek submission to their dictatorial regime and methods which have failed. The freedom, individualism and pioneer spirit that built this country is in grave danger of being lost and submerged in the regimentation of dictatorship and State ownership, which 1 consider a challenge to the democratic ideals of the British Empire. Rotorua. R. C. Walker.
