DOMINION TOURNEY P. SMITH ELIMINATED MANY SURPRISE RESULTS MURRAY'S RECORD ROUND [by TELKCJItAIMT —PtIKSS association] WELLINGTON, Tuesday Many surprising results appeared on tho scoreboard at the end of the first day's play in the first and second rounds of tho amateur and professional golf championships at Miramar, where the New Zealand tournament is beginning its final stage. P. G. Smith, holder of the amateur title, was eliminated by tlio Rangimario Club champion, j. Nash, in the first round, and A. Guy, of Poverty Bay, who was expected to do well among tho professionals, was beaten by W. Allb'on.

Tho day provided many highlights. A. Murray .broke the record for tho present tournament with a 67 in tho first round for tho professional title, in which lie beat J. Weir at the 10th. Murray was out in 33 and homo in 34. His card included five threes in a row. The Taihape amateur, J. Mortland, produced his best form in tho first round, when ho returned a brilliant 68, to defeat F. Dixon (St. Clair), 6 and 5. He went out in 34, including an caglo three at the third—a- distance of 456 yds. In the afternoon against K. Glendinning (Manawatu), Mortland lost touch and, although little separated tlio players for tho greater part of tho round, Glendinning was too steady. First Round Upset S. Taylor, who plays on a two handicap at tho Hutt Club, provided one of the first round upsets by eliminating G. Roberts, 4 and 3. Taylor wont out in 35 and, with a sensational string of five threes, was homo in 33. Taylor made several costly mistakes in his second round gamo against R. F. Kitto (Wanganui), whose steadiness gave him victory. P. G. Smith was one down at the turn and three down at the lltli in his game with J. Nash. He three putted at the 12th for a half, and holed a tenfooter at the 13th, to reduce his opponent's lead to two. He won the 16tli in three, to bo one down. However, Nash went on to win, 2 and 1. J. Hornabrook finished the day with victories over A. Sinie and J. Jeffery. The latter did a nice 70 to eliminate E. Henderson, but in tho second round against the open champion, Hornabrook was just a little too strong for him. W. Rcilly, who was out in 36, was square at the turn, but in spite of birdies at the sixth and 17th ho could not overcome R. Kitto's good putting, which gave tho latter victory by 2 and 1. Peilly was hitting a good ball, but Kitto was sinking them better. Kitto continued on his winning way in the afternoon to beat S. Taylor, one up. Fortunes fluctuated over most of the round, but eventually it was again Kitto's putting and approaching over tho last nine holes that proved the deciding factor.

After sea-saw play they were square at tho 16th, but Holland, with threo putts at the 17th, was ono down. Kitto's second at tho 18th hit a mound and the ball shot into a bunker. He exploded to within 12ft. of the cup and then holed his putt for the match.

J. Timnell, after being one down at the .turn in the second round, hit his drive at the 10th out of bounds and took a six. He was square at the 12th and the 17th and won the 18th. Tunnel! was hitting well, off the tec and his chips landed fairly close. B. Silk had a good putting day and was approaching with a variety of good shots. Ho had a good morning round. Ho took 35 to the turn to be three tip on J. Shelly. In the afternoon lie was stymied at the lltli, which ho lost, but he won the next fivo out of six to take the match, 2 and 1. The second round match between the professionals, Murray and James Galloway. provided a dramatic finish at the 19th, where Murray sank a 30ft. putt for a win.
