DEARER MAGAZINES

AMERICAN PUBLICATIONS Prices of American magazines were advanced in most Auckland bookshops yesterday. The fluctuation in exchange and to some extent the increased freights and insurance rates are the reasons for the rise in prices which, it is stated, have been sanctioned by the Price Tribunal. The extent of the advance varies, but. generally speaking it is from Id to 2d on a magazine previously costing Is. One popular magazine which was formerly Is 3d is now Is 6d, whereas another magazine previously priced at 4s 3d is now 4s 6d, so that there are some apparent anomalies. There is an impression that British magazines will shortly be increased in price, although the rate of the advance is not likely to be so great as for American.
