DISTRICT COUNCILS
Six', —The inference of "Observer" that co-operation with the farmer, through the district councils, cannot bo expected from members of the New Zealand Workers' Union evidently emanates from a biased mind or a very poor observation. The membership of the New Zealand Workers' Union is approximately 30,000 and covers more than a dozen occupations, mostly qonnected with the land, and I would ask "Observer" to believe me that by no stretch of imagination could they ba classified as "city workers.''
Personally, I know of a camp whore the neighbouring farmers and our members arc on the most friendly terms. Visits are regularly exchanged .and discussions entered into with mutual advantage. These men liave urged a farmer and his wife to attend the locnl race meetings for a day out while they do the evening milking. A spell I am sure much appreciated by the farmer. At another camp , a farmer neighbour received an eye injury necessitating a stay in hospital—this in the winter months when cream oheques arc small. The union members demonstrated a commendable understanding by opening a subscription list, everyone in the camp donating a day's pay. To-day a. member in a co-operative contract party is assisting at both milkings the children of a farmer who is sick and whoso wife has just returned from hospital. This man prepares his own breakfast and lunch and arrives at the shed before the first set of cups are oil', while his mates phase him away in time to help with the evening milking, These aro not isolated cases, but occur in all parts of tho country today.
Probably this is beyond "Observer's" understanding, but T would. offer the advice that he should place the telescope to his good eye and not to the blind one, in order to obtain a clear vision. . I sincerely hope the district councils will foster and. develop this spirit which is needed more now than ever. ■ - •
