ALL HALLOWS DAY
The annual religious festival of Hallowe'en,' or All Hallows Day, falls to-day, representing the vigil of the least of All Saints, now chiefly known • as-!.the '' Vl> °' Ihe Christian festival. In iCngland and Scotland the traditional observance i.s to devote Halloweve to merry-making and divination of the future. 11 was not so many years ago that in New Zealand as in other countries ghost parties, bonfires and pumpkin lanterns wore commonly produced, but now the observance has to a large extent been permitted to languish.
