VALERIE SHOWS DASH Some attractive efforts by candidates for the Whangarei meeting next week wero features of tho work at Takanini on Saturday morning, Penzanco, Miss Valerie, Namara and Tip Toes, all performing creditably. The outside grass' 1 was in uso and horses were galloped tho reverse way round. Sunola (Smith) and Proud Fox (McMlnn) were associated over fivo furlongs in 1.4, running tho first threo in 38s and half-mile in 51s. Both horses worked well, particularly Sunola, who 6ecms greatly improved. Arvakur (Smith) and Brazilian (Beguely) hit out very freely over fivo furlongs ,in> 1.3 3-5, and completed six in 1.18 before being pulled up. Arvakur, who had tho outside running, shaped very well. Brazilian showed all his former dash, and does not appear to have been adversely affected by his recent attack of bleeding. Dinky Di (Logan) and Ascot Bloom (Cleaver) showed dash over threo furlongs in 37 3-ss, tho former finishing just in front. They have not been up long, but have como to hand nicely and should bo ready to raco soon. Milamon (Kingi) heat Plcuron' (Beguely) by four lengths over five furlongs in 1.3 3-5. The former is an improved gelding who is expected to raco well among the hacks at Whangarei. To Kawiti (Clark) hit out well over half a mile, but was not timed. He is making good progress. Penzanco (Spinley) and Solitary (Hatwoll) wero responsible for an excellent effort over half a mile, finishing together in 50s. Penzance seems to be right buck to her best, and. in spite of lack of recent racing, she should show up at Whangarei. Solitary is also working very .well. . 1 Five Furlongs by Tahiti

Tahiti (Smith) was hotter than the foxbridge—Miss Egypt gelding (McMinn) over five furlongs in 1.5 1-5. The Foxbridge gelding is making good headway, and is shaping encouragingly. Air Port (Hatwell) and tho Vaals—Transaction filly (Spinley) showed dash in a sprint up the straight. They aro a pair of likely two-year-olds, who aro making excellent progress. The Dozer (Logan) was not bustled to complete the last three furlongs of his work in 395. He ran a creditable race at the Waikato Hunt meeting, and should soon bo seen to advantage. Hunting Bee (Beguely) and Bachelor King (Kingi) were together at the end of five furlongs in 1.4 2-5. both working well. Bachelor King is an acceptor for both tho Iluanui Hack Hurdles and tho Manaia Handicap on tho first day at Whangarei and the latter race may be his mission. lie may raco over hurdles on tho second day. Hunting Bee has benefited by her race at Ellerslie. and looks all tho better for tho outing. Philcourt (Bartle) and Mia Acrea (Ferguson) were associated over a milo in 1.48 1-5, running the first half in 51 3-ss. Philcourt was going well at the finish, and promises to make his presence felt in tho whangarei Cup, in which ho will bo ridden by C. G. Goulsbro. Namara (Logan) began better than Hot Box (Gray), and wan threo lengths in front over six furlongs in 1.17 2-5, after covering the first half-mile in Sis. Hot Box did not show much dash, but Namara worked bettor than ever, and has apparently thrived on recent racing. Ga.v Movie (Logan) hit out well over half a mile in 50 4-ss. Sho should bo a prospect among tho novices at Whangarei, where sho wiii bo ridden by F. Cleaver. King Louis (Bartle) and Grandora (Cleaver) wero together at the end of three furlongs in 39 3-os, upon which they could havo improved. Both arc making good progress.

Birthday Boy in Form Birthday Boy (Clark) was seen to advantage in defeating High Sea (Beguloy) by two lengths over seven furlongs in 1.30 2-5. The first four were run in 50 2-ss. Birthday Boy has been working attractively and High Sea has also been working well. Dolly Daydream • (Kingi) began better than Vaalsstar (Bartle) and led him by threo lengths to the end of five furlongs in 1.4 3-5. Dolly Daydream is tho Vaals—Se-a Song filly in A. Tinker's stable, and sho is to mako her debut at Whangarei. Gainos (Cleaver) ran tho last fivo of six furlongs in 1.5 3-5, and bears a very bright appearance. Tip Toes (Walters) hit out in dashing stylo over six turlonps in 1.17 2-5, »fter covering her first five in 1.3 2-5. Tip Toes is looking improved, and may soon ropeat her Tauranga success. Palustro (Walters) was not after time while covering half a milo in 5Gs. Gold Money Song (Curwen) hit out well over throo furlongs in 37 3-ss, Tho Hunting Song colt is to make his debut at the Waikato mooting. and, if his present rato of progress is maintained, he should be well forward. Ablaze (Curwen) and the Bronze EagleCordot colt (Smith) moved nicely over two furlongs in 25 3-ss, Ablaze is a hnlf-brother by Sunflare, to Romnni, and ho is shaping in very encouraging stylo. Ho is a member of F. Smith's team. First Gold Money (Smith) reeled off four furlongs in 50 2-ss, finishing full of running. She should be seen to advantage at Whangarei. where tho clnss is weaker than .that which sho has opposed lately. Lady Fox (Kingi) and Dauber (Bartle) went a milo in 1.51, going at 15s to the furlong over the first three and running the last fivo furlongs in 1.0. Both worked well. Buccaneer Improving nigh Crown (Spinley) and Buccaneer (Hatwell) were together throughout four furlongs in 50s, both novices being seen to advantago. Buccaneer is working much better now that tho tracks aro becoming firmer, and ho may yet fulfil his early promiso. Miss Valerie (Spinley) completed fivo furlongs in 1.3, the first threo in 37 3-ss, and haif-mile in 50s. It is doubtful if alio has ever looked better than at present. On the plough, Orelio (Inglis) and Anion (Curwen) strode over seven furlongs in 1.37 2-5. both showing nnxiousncss to increase tho paco. Valamito (inglis) and Full Hand (Curwen) worked freely ovor tho same ground in 1.35 3-5, tho first threo taking 40 3-ss. Full Hand was under a good hold. Inver (Coleman) dofcatod Flood Tide (Stratton) over six furlongs, running tho last fivo in 1.5. Inver is working very pleasingly, but his form in public has not reached expectations. Princess Val (Coleman) sprinted tho last two furlongs of hor work in 20s. Valimeen (Qucdley), who is in great heart, showed dash by running three furlonpcs in 37 3-ss. Valimeen is very speedy, - and appears to bo right back to her best form. Hunter's Roso (Bond) was required to go fast only over the concluding two furlongs, which she completed in 24 3-ss.
