OFFICER CADETS

11l SELECTED MEN SPECIAL TRAINING COURSE WORK AT TRENTHAM CAMP [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WELLINGTON, Saturday An intensive course of instruction is at present beliir* undergone at Trentham by 111 men selected as officer cadets from tho three main camps of the special military force. Work 011 tho parade ground during the day and lectures in the evening make up tho work of this special unit, which is officially designated the Advanced Training Company. There are 73 men from the rifle battalions, 15 from tho artillery, 12 from tho machine-gun battalions, nine from tho Army Service Corps, and two from the engineers

Tho Army School is under tho command of Major J. I. Brooke. Tho artillery instructor is Captain P. V. Williams, formerly of tho Royal Artillery, assisted by Staff Sorgeant-Major J. Lopor, formerly of tho 8.N.Z.A., and tho infantry instructor is Captain A. H. L. Sugden, N.Z.S.C. The infantry cadets are receiving instruction in the operation of Lewis guns and tho artillery cadets are familiarising themselves with 18-pounders. Tho Army Service Corps and infantry cadets will progress to specialised instruction after completing an elementary period of infantry training. Tho artillery cadets will carry out field operations in the Wairarapa next Wednesday. Thoy will bivouac there for the night and will carry out a mimic battlo covering infantry operations. They will return to Trentham pn Thursday.

NURSING SERVICE

VOLUNTEERS IN AUCKLAND RESTRICTION ON NUMBERS ♦ , More than SO per cent of the sisters at the Auckland Hospital have volunteered for service in tho New Zealand Army Nursing Service. Three Auckland nurses have already been at the Hopuhopu military camp since October 4. They are Sisters D. I. Brown, P. Williams and E. Herd. The lady superintendent of the Auckland Hospital, Miss E. M. Nutsev, stated yesterday that care was being taken to avoid public' hospitals being short staffed as the result of nurses enjisting for military service. Applications would be considered by a special committee in, Wellington, consisting of the director of nursing for the Health Department, Miss M. I. Lambie, the matron-in-chief of the New Zealand Army Nursing Service, Miss I. G. Willis, and the matron of the Palmerston North Hospital, Miss L. M. Banks.

Miss Nutsey added that the committee was taking only a percentage of nurses from the different hospitals. Those who were accepted would be between the ages of 25 and 40, and there would be a stringent medical examination. .

HOSPITALITY OFFERED NGARUAWAHIA PARISH HALL [fkoji our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Sunday A statement that the Church of England authorities had mado arrangements to throw open the parish hall at Ngaruawahia on Sundays for the use of men from the Hopuhopu camp is made by the Rev. J. D. W. Raine, vicar of Ngaruawahia, in the current issue of the Waikato Diocesan Magazine, He added that the Church Army Associates had also undertaken to billet any men on leave during the week-ends. Supper and entertainments would be provided in the hall on Friday and Saturday nights.

LEAVE IN HAMILTON CLUB. WELL PATRONISED [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Sunday Over 100 soldiers from the Hopuhopu camp accepted tlio hospitality of the Hamilton Soldiers' Club in the Bledisloe Hall yesterday, and there was a fair attendance of men at the club todav. Members of the Hamilton National Club acted as hosts and hostesses, and made the visitors foci at home, _An increasing number of men are being billeted in Hamilton during week-ends, especially those from the South Island, and they greatly appreciate the change from camp life.
