DEFENCE OF AUSTRALIA The defence of Australia was con* sidered ail important matter oO years ago. The following is an extract from a lengthy report on the subject in the New Zealand Herald on October 28, 1889: "Major-General Edwards considers that the Australian colonies offer such a rich and tempting prize that if they had to rel.y on their own resources would certainly be called upon toJiR n » for their independence, and,, pthous any cohesion or power of combinswion, their position would be one of danger. "Regarding the proposed _ orgawsa* tion of military forces of the Austral" colonies, M«jor-General Edwards Pp®" out that before the completion or tn overland lines it was impossible for tD colonies to co-operate for defence, id is not even now possible, on ;acww. of the different organisations, and cause the colonies cannot employ torcw outside their own borders. Combine action for defence would be niore .econ mical, and far more effective present system of purely local deience.
